Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos archipelago has a population of around 40,000, is a province of Ecuador, a country in northwestern South America, and the islands are all part of Ecuador's national park system. The archipelago has been known by many different names, including the "Enchanted Islands," because of the way in which the strong and swift currents made navigation difficult and also because of the beautiful geography and biodiversity.

Galapagos means saddle in Spanish. The large Galapagos Tortoises on some of the islands had a shell that resembled an old Spanish saddle, thus the name. The tortoise is a unique animal found only in the Galapagos Islands, yet there are no more than 200 in the 13 main islands. See Joe's Galapagos Video

Accommodations vary depending on the destination. In East Africa and the South American Amazon you will stay rustic lodges or in some cases where there are no lodges you will use tents; in the Galapagos Islands you live aboard a small but luxurious boat. If you decide to travel to the Ecuadorian rain forest of the upper Amazon basin, you'll stay in thatched lodges unobtrusively tucked into the jungle greenery. This is definitely a primitive experience!
